Ford Foundation Commits Initial $1 Million in Emergency Aid for Haiti

NEW YORK, 19 January 2010 — The Ford Foundation has announced $1 million in grants to support urgent humanitarian relief efforts for victims of last week's earthquake in Haiti. The grants, for $500,000 each, will go to Oxfam International and Partners in Health, two organizations with longstanding operations on the ground in Haiti.

"All of us at the Ford Foundation stand with the people of Haiti in this extraordinarily challenging time," said Luis A. Ubiñas, president of the Ford Foundation. "Both Oxfam International and Partners in Health are long-time grantees of the Ford Foundation. Their track record in Haiti gives them a deep familiarity with the country and positions them to serve as strong leaders in emergency relief and recovery efforts."

The Ford Foundation is an independent, nonprofit grant-making organization. For more than half a century it has worked with courageous people on the frontlines of social change worldwide, guided by its mission to strengthen democratic values, reduce poverty and injustice, promote international cooperation, and advance human achievement. With headquarters in New York, the foundation has offices in Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.
